[767] BIOGRAPHICAL INFORMATION - EDMOND DEJEAN COLES
Edmond was from the Breaux Bridge, St. Martin Ph., LA, area. He and Ione met while she was living with her half-sister, Talitha Ann Holden Evans.
After their marriage, Ed and Ione bought a farm in Leonville, LA, where he raised his family. Ed Coles had no formal education. Ione taught him to the equivalent of the fourth grade. The following information is taken from obituarial news articles and from his daughter Myrtle.
He was a well known resident of Leonville. He was a deacon of the Baptist church and took an active part in the programs of the Opelousas Masonic Lodge. He was actively identified with the Woodmen of the World Camp No. 501 in Leonville, and had served as its Secretary for approximately 25 years. He was instrumental in having the present Leonville WOW home erected. He was deeply interested in the development of agriculture in St. Landry and he was a leader in projects that had as their objectives better farm practices and benefits to farmers. He was also a member of Humble Cottage Lodge No. 19, F&AM, of Opelousas, LA, and a member of the Order of the Eastern Star.
After their children were grown and gone, and they could no longer get cheap labor for their farm, Ed and Ione retired to Covington, LA to be nearer their children, most of whom had moved to the New Orleans area. They lived there for about a year and a half, during which he became a deacon of the First Baptist Church before his death in 1944 at the age of 75 years.
Baptist rites were held on the Sunday afternoon following his death at his late residence at 1515 26th Avenue in Covington. Religious services followed at the First Baptist Church, followed by interment in the Covington Cemetery. Because of the long distance from Opelousas and Leonville to Covington, his fellow Masons and WOW members from St. Landry were unable to attend funeral services, but the Covington Masonic Lodge and WOW Camp conducted rituals.
[780] BIOGRAPHICAL INFORMATION - IONE DRUSILLA HOLDEN
Ione was orphaned at a young age, her mother having died when she was 6, and her father when she was 9. She was raised by her half-sister, Talitha Ann Holden Evans, in Louisiana, where she eventually met her future husband, Ed Coles. They were married on New Year's Eve in 1898 at the Evans home by Brother I. T. Reams, the minister of the M.E. Church South. Witnesses were O. B. Seward, L. P. Brunchand, and L. G. Coles (presumably her brother).
After their marriage, they moved to Leonville, LA, where she became widely known as an active worker in St. Landry Parish for home demonstration club programs. She supported her husband's involvement in agricultural projects. She and her husband were both members of the Baptist Church.
After her husband's death, she lived for several years with the family of her daughter, Myrtle. She often attended meetings of Encircler Chapter, Order of the Eastern Star, in Kenner, LA, with a family friend. It is not known whether she was a member of this chapter or of another chapter. Ione died at Touro Hospital in New Orleans, LA, in 1961.
